Methodology

Includes a surgical pathology consultation, battery of special stains, and teased nerve fiber analysis.

Specimen Requirements

Nerve biopsy specimen. Prepare and transport specimen.
Note:  Include the tentative clinical diagnosis, name of nerve biopsied, date of biopsy, and indication for nerve biopsy and forward it with the specimen.

Reference Values

An interpretive report will be provided.

88325 - consultation, comprehensive, with review of records and specimens, with report on referred material

 

The following CPT codes are used for most biopsies when adequate tissue is provided. Occasionally additional stains may be required.
88313 x 7 - Congo red, hematoxylin-and-eosin, luxol fast blue (periodic-acid schiff [PAS]), Masson’s trichrome, methylene blue, methyl violet, and Turnbull blue stains
88348 - electron microscopy, nerve
88362 - nerve tease biopsy
