Test Code HIVPCR HIV-1 RNA Quantification by PCR, Plasma

Methodology

Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR)

Specimen Requirements

Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s). Green-top (heparin) tube is not acceptable. Spin down, remove plasma from cells within 6 hours, and send 2.5 mL (minimum volume: 1.2 mL) of EDTA plasma refrigerated. If there is a delay in transport of ≥5 hours, send specimen frozen in plastic vial.

Note:  This test is intended to be used to monitor known HIV-positive infections. It is not intended for primary detection of HIV infections except in children <18 months of age when serologic tests are not useful.

Reference Values

HIV-1 RNA Not Detected

Result range of the assay is 20 to 10,000,000 copies/mL (1.30 to 7.00 log copies/mL).
