Test Code HBELE Hemoglobin Electrophoresis
Methodology
Capillary Zone Electrophoresis
Useful For
Diagnosis and classification of hemoglobin disorders, including thalassemias and hemoglobin variants.
Recent transfusion information and most recent complete blood cell count results should be considered when interpreting all hemoglobin electrophoresis results. The laboratory has extensive experience in hemoglobin variant identification and many cases can be confidently classified without molecular testing. However, molecular confirmation is always available for send out testing, subject to sufficient sample quantity.
Testing Algorithm
This evaluation will always include hemoglobin (Hb) A2 and HbF and hemoglobin electrophoresis utilizing capillary electrophoresis. A primary hemoglobin interpretation with definitive results will be provided.
Reflex testing, performed at additional charge: acid gel electrophoresis for hemoglobin variant confirmation. If test results in the profile are abnormal, additional testing performed at Mayo Clinic Laboratories may be recommended for further analysis.
