Methodology
Note: Routine cultures on bronchoscopy specimens include a Gram stain.
Specimen Requirements
Specimen must arrive within 2 hours of collection.
Contact Huntsville Hospital Microbiology Department at 256-265-2171 prior to collection for special collection procedure on quantitative brush cultures.
1. Submit all liquid specimens in a sterile, leakproof container
at ambient temperature only.
2. Microscope slides should be submitted in a slide holder or
mailer.
3. Label container with patient’s information, date and
actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
4. Forward specimen promptly.
Note: Maximum storage of specimen is 24 hours refrigerated (not recommended).
Reference Values
No growth of “pathogens” (These cultures may grow normal “respiratory” flora.)
